- Establish regular patrols to prevent poaching and protect nesting sites.
- Install signage and markers to demarcate protected areas.
- Education and Awareness Campaigns:
- Conduct outreach programs in schools and local communities to raise awareness about sea turtle conservation.
- Develop educational materials highlighting the ecological importance of sea turtles.
- Habitat Restoration:
- Rehabilitate and clean nesting beaches by removing debris and ensuring safe conditions for sea turtles.
The project will directly benefit the local community through capacity building, improved coastal biodiversity, and potential eco-tourism opportunities. It will also contribute to the global effort of conserving endangered sea turtles.
This project aims to protect the nesting grounds of endangered Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Leupung, Aceh Besar, Indonesia, by involving the local community in conservation efforts. With a focus on sustainable and low-cost activities, the project will train local volunteers to monitor and safeguard nesting sites, conduct educational workshops in schools and community centers to raise awareness about sea turtle conservation, and carry out small-scale habitat cleanups to improve the condition of the nesting beaches. The project will also install simple signage to mark protected areas and deter poaching. By fostering community participation and education, the initiative seeks to create lasting benefits for both the local population and the environment.
This project builds on Natural Aceh’s previous efforts in community-based coastal conservation, particularly in the protection and restoration of mangrove ecosystems in Aceh. Our organization has worked closely with local communities in the Alue Naga area to promote sustainable practices in oyster farming, which has significantly contributed to environmental protection and the economic empowerment of women and youth. Through these initiatives, we have established strong relationships with local stakeholders and developed expertise in engaging communities in conservation efforts.
The sea turtle conservation project in Leupung is a natural extension of our work in environmental education and community engagement. By applying the same model of community involvement and education that has been successful in previous projects, we aim to build a sustainable and locally-driven conservation effort for sea turtles. Additionally, the project aligns with our broader goal of protecting marine biodiversity and supporting local livelihoods through eco-tourism and environmental stewardship.
